Are you an inside or outside person?

Today is Palm/Passion Sunday. Most/we usually focus on the palms stuff--the parade and the festive atmosphere. Seldom have I experienced worships services on this day that take us from the festival entry to the darkness at the beginning of Holy Week. Certainly it's more fun to focus on the 'happy' part.
Yet, what always comes to my mind is something I learned while I was in Jerusalem. Our teacher asked us of the days of Jesus, "Now who do you think lives on the outside of the gated community (Jerusalem)?" Well, the answer, of course, was all the poor, common folk. Those were the folk who were singing Hosanna's to Jesus--he was always with them, talking to them, helping them, giving them hope, in fact, he was one of them!
Our teacher went on to remind us that the folk inside the gate where the elite (both religious and political), the ones with the power, wealth and control. Of course, we remember that it was inside the gated community that Jesus was 'convicted' and sentenced to execution through crucifixion, that era's state-of-the-art capital punishment.
This has always been interesting to me because we often hear "the crowds Hosanna's on Sunday turned to 'kill him' on Friday." Yet, that's not really the case because there are 2 different sets of crowds - the ones on the 'inside' and the ones on the 'outside'. Of course, today we refer to people on the 'inside' of something as the clueful and 'with it' people--if you are on the 'inside' then you've got it made. Yet, in typical Jesus fashion, it wasn't the ones on the 'inside' who "got it", it was those on the 'outside' who were the clueful ones. Which brings us to ask the question, "Are we people of the 'inside' or the 'outside'?" Not as simple a question as it might seem. There goes Jesus again turning things upside down! Something to ponder during this Holy Week.
